“Keep Your Heart Open”

One of the keys to keep your sound flowing easily is to keep your chest slightly lifted. It’s common for people to collapse their posture in the rib cage. Spending too much time at the computer is a big culprit for this habit.

I like to think of it as keeping your heart center open. Tap on your chest at the sternum and slightly roll your shoulders back. This brings our attention to raising the rib cage so that we can keep it open and relaxed.

A simple trick is to vocalize while standing against a wall. Keep your shoulders, your heels, and your buttocks connected to the wall. Keep your head as close to the wall as possible, do not allow it to reach or fall forward. A mirror is very helpful. Allow yourself to feel relaxed & open in this position.

From an energetic perspective - When we are singing we want to be expressing from and connecting with the audience from our heart. Keeping it open enables this to happen and also keeps us shining with good technique!
