Day #12: 30 Days of Songwriting

Another 12 hour Immersion & a Book Party!

And how much fun it is....
Along the way, I have been touching upon this whole Immersion Composition thing.  So, I thought I would take a moment to expand a bit.  This concept is taken from a book entitled,  "The Frustrated Songwriters Handbook"  The idea behind the book is to lay out ideas, games and methods for breaking through 'writers block'  And a large portion of the book talks about the 12 hour immersion method wherein all you do for 12 hours is WRITE!  The goal is 20 songs in 12 hours.  That being said, it doesn't matter what you write....  Does not have to be completed songs, you can be as creative and crazy as you want.  The point is simply to write, ANYTHING!  and it's fine you don't reach the #20

It has been great fun for me to delve into this process.  A cool thing that has come out of it is that I am composing instrumentals again, Playing with Garage Band & working hands on with Midi for the first time.  The goal is to try and get my chops up in this area so that I can begin to pitch instrumentals to Film and TV.

And of course,  part of my time in these immersions is dedicated to standard 'songs'  Yesterday I wrote one in less than 10 minutes.  It was simply about the immersion process and nothing anyone will ever hear, but it's funny, hopeful and it's amazing what can come out when we remove our filters of what things are 'supposed' to be and we simply write from what is naturally flowing

My favorite little tune from this immersion is called, "The Book Party."  Searching for a lyrical idea, I began by looking at my bookshelf, noting authors and book titles.  The concept for the song is:  imagine if all these authors and book characters were at the same soiree? Well, at first it's fun - Kerouac is drinking moonshine with Hemmingway, People are being healed by Louise Hay... (you get it the point and as you've probably discerned, it's not a serious song....)  Then as the party progresses all hell begins to break loose - The Little Prince goes missing, Shakespeare and Marilyn are kissing, The Tao Te Ching is screaming that The Tao of Pooh is Demeaning...  so in the final lines, I decide, perhaps a book party isn't the best idea.  But it was fun to write about!

Love and Light to You,
